If we look back over the last half century or so we appear to have had some sort of crisis or recession roughly every 10 to 12 years. Although we have never seen a crisis quite like this one, there have been some large upheavals such as the Oil Crisis in 1973, UK recession of 1981, the 9/11 attacks, the 2008 financial crash and the 2012 UK tanker drivers’ strike.

When I started to write this article a week ago, I had a clear sense of the content but over the period of the week a lot of the content seemed superfluous, no longer relevant and naive. We are in unprecedented times and we are all whether in our business or our personal lives managing in crisis.

For years, our industry has conceptualized the consumer’s path to purchase, or purchase journey, as a purchase funnel. We have assumed the consumer goes through an orderly process of awareness (beginning to dream) to consideration (this might really be for me) to evaluation (the search for information) to purchase to use.

Apart from a brief few years running a mail-order company I have spent all my working life in or around manufacturing. In the late 1960s I still remember doing part of my apprenticeship in a traditional garment tailoring factory, lots of handwork with re-cutting and re-shaping parts as necessary.

Marina development is a risky financial undertaking. This is especially so in developing markets where the market is facility driven. In other words, a developer builds in the absence of local demand but anticipates that once the facility is completed, demand will be stimulated through proper management, marketing and promotion.

Dr. Jouko Huju This is the headline I used when I wrote my first editorial for Finnboat’s magazine back in 1996. I was contemplating the problems of the industry’s exposure or the lack thereof, and how to improve it. Being seen in the right media at the right time was just as important back then.
